Rio Red Grapefruit

  • Deep ruby-red flesh
  • Sweeter and less bitter than white grapefruit
  • High juice content
  • Vigorous and productive
  • More cold-hardy than other grapefruits

Botanical Name: Citrus paradisi

Rio Red is a well-known red-fleshed grapefruit with attractive color, good juice, and fresh-market recognition. Developed in Texas, this variety is prized for its deep ruby-red flesh, which is sweeter and less bitter than white or pink grapefruits. The fruit is medium to large, with a smooth, yellow rind that may develop a pink blush. The flavor is rich, sweet-tart, and full-bodied. The tree is vigorous, productive, and more cold-hardy than many grapefruits. Excellent for warmer areas and citrus collectors. This is the grapefruit that converts people who think they don’t like grapefruit.

Taste note: Sweet, rich, low bitterness – like a berry-flavored citrus.

Rio Red needs full sun and heat to develop its deep red color. In cooler climates, flesh may be pinker. It is more cold-tolerant than other grapefruits but still needs frost protection. Plant in well-drained soil. Water deeply but infrequently. Fertilize with citrus fertilizer three times per year. Prune to maintain an open canopy. Fruit can hang on the tree for months without losing quality – this is called “storage on the tree.”
