Strawberries need full sun, rich soil, and consistent water. Plant with the crown (where leaves emerge) at soil level – burying the crown causes rot; leaving it too high dries out. Mulch with straw (hence the name) to keep fruit clean and retain moisture. June-bearing plants produce one large crop. After fruiting, they send out runners. Allow some runners to root for next year’s plants, but thin to prevent overcrowding. In cold zones, mulch heavily in winter to prevent heaving.
