About This Plant
Blueberry is a long-lived fruiting shrub with antioxidant-rich berries and attractive foliage. Highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) are the most commonly grown for home gardens. They produce clusters of small, bell-shaped white flowers in spring, followed by dusky blue berries in summer. The foliage turns brilliant red in fall, providing multi-season ornamental value. Blueberries are acid-loving plants – they absolutely require acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5) to thrive. Best marketed with acidic soil/potting mix guidance. Plant two different varieties for cross-pollination and larger fruit.
Taste note: Sweet-tart, blueberry flavor – far superior to grocery store.

How to Grow
Soil acidity is the #1 factor for blueberry success. Test your soil pH before planting. If pH is above 5.5, you must amend with elemental sulfur or plant in containers with acidic potting mix. Plant in full sun. Water consistently – blueberries are shallow-rooted and dislike drought. Mulch with pine bark or pine needles to maintain acidity and moisture. Fertilize with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants (e.g., for azaleas or rhododendrons). Do not use nitrate-based fertilizers – blueberries prefer ammonium.

Long-Term Care
- Location: Full sun. Tolerates partial sun but fruit production suffers.
- Soil & Drainage: Acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), well-drained, high organic matter.
- Feeding: Acid-loving plant fertilizer (e.g., 4-6-6) in early spring.
- Watering: Consistent moisture. Do not let soil dry completely.
- Pruning: In late winter. Remove old, weak, or crossing branches.
- Mulch: Pine bark or pine needles, 3–4 inches deep.
Harvesting & Use
