Black Amber requires the same conditions as other Japanese plums: full sun, well-drained soil, and winter chilling (500–600 hours). It is less cold-hardy than Simca (the hybrid). You must plant a pollinizer – any other Japanese plum (e.g., ‘Santa Rosa’, ‘Satsuma’, or ‘Shiro’) that blooms at the same time. Prune in late winter to maintain an open center. Thin fruit heavily – Japanese plums produce heavily and will break branches if not thinned. Water consistently during fruit development. Fertilize in early spring.
