It is a cross between a pummelo and a grapefruit, inheriting the pummelo’s large size, thick rind, and mild flavor, with the grapefruit’s juiciness. The flesh is pale yellow, almost seedless, and exceptionally sweet with no unpleasant aftertaste. The rind is thick and easy to peel – you can eat it out of hand like an orange. How to Grow
Melo Gold is grown like other citrus: full sun, well-drained soil, and regular feeding. It is somewhat more cold-sensitive than oranges, so provide frost protection. Water deeply but infrequently. Fertilize three times yearly with citrus fertilizer. Prune lightly to maintain shape. The thick rind makes it more resistant to fruit flies and mechanical damage than thin-skinned citrus.
